FIRST.bet CEO Tom Light on the Sportsbook as an Acquisition Engine and AI-Personalised Promotions | Exclusive Interview with iGaming News Today
Tom Light has worked across operators and suppliers and is now Founder and CEO of FIRST.bet, a sportsbook technology provider serving operators in regulated markets.
In an exclusive interview with iGaming News Today, he made a point about where a sportsbook actually sits in an operator’s business that has more to do with marketing than with product.
The sportsbook is an acquisition engine, not an isolated product
“Sportsbook isn’t an isolated product,” Tom Light told iGaming News Today. “For many operators it’s also an acquisition engine that drives their wider business.”
That framing changes what a supplier relationship is for. He described working alongside operators to optimise the sportsbook, improve player engagement, increase retention, fine-tune promotions and maximise margins, rather than simply shipping software and stepping back.
Execution, not availability
Tom Light was blunt about feature-list marketing. Bet Builder, Cash Out and Early Payout are no longer differentiators, he said, because everyone can claim them.
The questions he thinks matter are how many markets Bet Builder actually supports, how accurate and how fast the pricing is, how often Cash Out is genuinely available, how reliable it stays during live events, and how easily operators can configure and personalise the experience.
“Every feature is about execution, not availability,” he said. “That’s where the real difference is made.”
Where AI takes personalisation next
Tom Light expects AI to change what suppliers are for. Historically they delivered both the backend engine and much of the frontend. Going forward, he told iGaming News Today, AI will let operators build highly personalised frontends while suppliers become the intelligence and transaction engine behind them.
FIRST.bet has already started moving that way with SportOS, he said, giving operators more control over how they build and present the sportsbook while the supplier provides the underlying infrastructure, pricing, trading and execution.
His view of where that lands: “AI will personalize everything, from content and promotions to market presentation and player journeys, making every sportsbook feel unique rather than identical.”
He also expects the product itself to change character, becoming “less transactional and much more interactive and entertaining”, with the expectation having shifted from placing a bet to “a complete entertainment experience around sport”.
